Why SIGITProjMgmt?

Project Management research has evolved primarily from the engineering disciplines. However, it is now an integral element of information technology and software project management. For example, a search of the AISWorld Faculty Directory on the keyword “project management” returns over 200 names. Researchers in IT project management have recently focused on problems that cover a large range of topics that cut across many IS areas -- virtual project management, agile project management, knowledge networks, project management methodologies (e.g. PRINCE), distributed project management, project leadership, project quality metrics, project management standards, best practices in project management, and project success.

Various standards organizations have a great influence in mainstreaming Project Management approaches in all industrial sectors, for example:

  • PMI® (Project Management Institute) is a 200,000 strong professional membership organization that has permeated thousands of firms around the globe and has established its Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBoK®) as the de facto standard for project management practice. PMI also has an Organizational Project Management Maturity Model (OPM3)© that is akin to the Capability Maturity Model that was developed in the context of software engineering projects.
  • PRINCE (PRojects IN Controlled Environments) is a structured method for effective project management. It is a de facto standard used extensively by the UK Government and is widely recognized and used in the private sector, both in the UK and throughout the world.
  • ISO 9000 is the international standards organization’s family of standards primarily concerned with "quality management". ISO compliance supports the implementation of project management disciplines and controls.
  • Capability Maturity Model® Integration (CMMI) is the Carnegie Mellon Software Engineering Institute’s collection of process improvement approaches that can be used to create effective business processes. One category of processes relates to Project Management.
  • IEEE has a collection of software engineering standards that encompass various elements of project management.

Keeping in mind the phenomenal growth of interest in IT project management, the Association for Information Systems (AIS) Special Interest Group for Information Technology Project Management (SIGITProjMgmt) will globally promote and facilitate the creation, presentation and publication of research examining all facets of information technology project management, including pedagogical issues. SIGITProjMgmt will also strive to be the global leader in linking and integrating IT project management research and practice.
